Keeping Tennessee 4th grade standards visible sounds easy until you are standing at the board five minutes before class, trying to turn a long standard into an “I can” statement that actually makes sense to a fourth grader.

I have definitely been there.

Standards are important, but the official wording is not always written with nine- and ten-year-olds in mind. That is why I like pairing each standard with a clear, student-friendly learning target. It helps students understand what they are learning, gives the lesson a little more focus, and saves teachers from rewriting objectives every week.

Make Standards Part of the Classroom

A standards display does not have to take over an entire wall. I usually recommend choosing a small area near the whiteboard, focus wall, or daily agenda and displaying only the standards currently being taught.

The goal is not to cover the room with every standard on the first day of school. Students are much more likely to pay attention when the display changes along with the lesson.

These 4th Grade TN ELA Standards and Learning Targets Posters include every Tennessee fourth-grade ELA standard along with a student-friendly “I can” learning target. The posters cover reading, writing, language, and foundational literacy, so they can be used throughout the entire school year.

You can post the current reading standard beside your anchor chart, add the writing standard to your lesson display, or place copies in student binders. I especially like having the full standard and the simplified learning target together. Teachers still have the official language they need, while students have a version they can understand.

Give Math Lessons a Clear Focus

Fourth-grade math covers a lot of ground. Students move through place value, operations, fractions, measurement, data, and geometry, and it can sometimes feel like you are changing gears every few weeks.

The Tennessee 4th Grade Math Standards and Learning Targets Posters include all 25 fourth-grade math standards. Each poster has the standard code, full Tennessee standard, and a student-friendly learning target.

At the beginning of a lesson, you can quickly read the learning target together and ask students what they think they will need to know by the end of class. At the end, return to the target and have them explain whether they met it.

It only takes a minute, but it helps connect the activity students completed with the actual skill they were supposed to learn.

Keep Up With the New Tennessee Science Standards

Science standards can be especially time-consuming to unpack because one standard may include several ideas, skills, or performance expectations.

The 4th Grade TN Science Standards and Learning Targets were created for the new 2026 Tennessee science standards. Every fourth-grade science standard is included with a matching learning target already written for you.

These can be displayed around the classroom, added to science notebooks, placed in student binders, or printed one page at a time as you move through the curriculum.

They are also helpful when planning a new science unit. Instead of repeatedly searching through the state standards document, you have the standards and student-friendly objectives together in one place.

Make Social Studies Objectives Easier to Understand

Tennessee fourth-grade social studies includes a huge amount of content. Students are learning about geography, Indigenous cultures, exploration, colonization, the American Revolution, the Constitution, and the growth of the United States.

With so many names, events, and dates involved, it is easy for students to focus on the individual facts and miss the purpose of the lesson.

I like using the learning target to frame the lesson before introducing the day’s content. It gives students a reason to pay attention to the reading, discussion, map, or activity because they know what they should be able to explain afterward.

One Simple System for the Entire Year

The best part about using Tennessee 4th grade standards and learning targets across ELA, math, science, and social studies is the consistency.

Students learn where to look for the day’s objective and begin to understand the language of learning targets. Teachers have an easy reference for lesson planning, classroom displays, student notebooks, and walkthroughs.

It is a small classroom system, but it removes one more task from your planning list, and during a busy school week, I will gladly take every time-saver I can get.
